Jose, known as Mel, started with a simple one-man sawmill operation, providing quality lumber and timbers to the local community. As demand increased, the business expanded, occupying several locations before settling at the corner of State Road 38 and Highway 522—the current site of Centinel Bank in Questa.
In 1963, a new facility was built further south on Highway 522 with the help of Mel’s older brother, Moises Rael, and others. This location initially had a much smaller yard, but in the 1980s, the large yard we know today was excavated to accommodate growing inventory and customer needs.
The store, heated by a large auger-fed coal-burning furnace, was more than just a lumberyard—it also housed a full-service furniture and appliance store. Large rolls of carpet, pre-cut linoleum, and home essentials were stocked to serve the growing needs of Questa and surrounding communities.
Mel was never afraid to try new things. Known as one of the hardest-working men in Questa, he dedicated himself to helping the community grow. Alongside his wife, he played a key role in:
✔ Developing the Questa Community Water System
✔ Bringing electricity to the northern region
✔ Founding the Questa Fire Department
Through his businesses, Mel helped countless families in Questa, Cerro, Costilla, Amalia, and Red River build their homes and businesses, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
